New Housing Allocations Policy from April 2026

Broxtowe Borough Council has approved a new Housing Allocations Policy.

New applications are now being assessed using the new Policy timelines. Existing applications will be assessed upon relevant review stage in line with the Policy.

• Band 1: reviewed every 12 weeks
• Band 2: reviewed every 26 weeks

Bands 3 and 4 will be reviewed at point of offer or annually.

The allocations policy explains who can join the Housing Register, how applications are assessed, how priority is awarded and how social housing is allocated through our Choice Based Lettings system.

The updated policy has been reviewed to ensure it continues to meet local housing needs, reflects current legislation and provides a fair and transparent approach to allocating social housing.

Key points include:

• Information about who can qualify to join the Housing Register.
• Details of local connection requirements and available exceptions.
• A clear banding system, with priority awarded according to housing need.
• Additional support for groups such as care leavers, members of the Armed Forces and people affected by domestic abuse.
• Information about Independent Living accommodation.
• Guidance on bidding for properties through Homechoice.
• Details about reviews and appeals if you disagree with a decision.

Demand for social housing remains significantly higher than the number of homes available. The Council is committed to ensuring available homes are allocated fairly, transparently and to those households with the greatest housing need.
